Police Pre-Academy Training Certificate - CRJ7
The Police Pre-Academy Training (PPAT) certificate is for individuals who seek to become employed as a law enforcement officer in South Carolina and become Class 1 - Certified Law Enforcement Officers (LEO) through the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy (SCCJA) and the Law Enforcement Training Council (LETC) pursuant to South Carolina Code of Laws Chapter 23.
Students in the Police Pre-Academy Training (PPAT) certificate must undergo a background check.

The following information provides a guide for advisors who are helping students enroll in this program.
Program Notes
The courses will be scheduled in seven-week formats (A and B term offerings) during the fall and spring semesters in the traditional lecture modality with students enrolling in and completing two courses concurrently.
The admissions requirements for the PPAT certificate include the following:
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Must be a high school graduate or have an equivalency.
- Must successfully pass a criminal background check.
- Must be at least 20 years of age to enter program.
An individual does not have to be currently employed with a law enforcement agency to enter the PPAT program but will have to become employed with a SC Law Enforcement Agency prior to attending the 8-week SCCJA program in Columbia, SC. The individual does not have to be 21-years old to enter the program but should not be more than a year away from turning 21 when entering the program. The Criminal Justice program plans to enroll a cohort of at least 12 students each fall and spring semester.

Student Learning Outcomes
- Apply core criminal justice foundation concepts of criminal law, juvenile justice, report writing, ethics, judiciary, and criminal justice systems in solving and defending logical arguments and applications in the field.
- Explain and identify the roles and responsibilities of various criminal justice agencies in the US and the inter-relationship with other agencies and to the public.
- Identify criminal acts (SC Codes of law), their elements, parties to offenses, and application to the criminal justice system.
- Demonstrate verbal communication skills needed to effectively interact with the public and offenders as well as written and speech communication skills necessary to effectively convey information and prepare reports.
- Identify and apply utilization of appropriate technology when submitting reports, accessing and/or interpreting statistical, graphical, pictorial, and/or agency data.
- Understand and apply professional, moral, ethical, and analytical problem-solving behavior consistent with criminal justice duties and procedures as measured by self-evaluations and/or cooperative work experiences.
- Apply knowledge by successfully passing the SCCJA Acadis Portal Exam.
