Fire Science Certificate - FST7
The Fire Science Certificate provides instruction in fire prevention methodology, fire detection systems, fire codes, fire investigation, rescue, safety and salvage procedures, hazardous materials, and fire behavior and extinguishment. This program assists in qualifying firefighters for management positions within fire service.

Program Notes

Physical health screening and immunization must be submitted at least 30 days prior to the first day of class. Sports physicals for high school students are also acceptable.
CPR must be completed prior to the first day of class. Students will need CPR/AED/First Aid card that does not expire before the program ends.
Some online, independent-study coursework must be completed prior to starting the program in August. Please contact the program coordinator for more information.
Notes About Individual Classes
EMS coursework requires RDG 100 or test score equivalent or exemption.
FST courses are only offered to Dual Enrollment students.

Purpose Statement
To prepare students for entry level and career advancement in the fire service by educating them in the fundamental concepts of professionalism, communication, problem solving, teamwork, and hands-on training for a successful career in the fire service.

Students will acquire the skills and knowledge required to assess and mange patients of all ages with a variety of complaints, medical conditions, and traumatic injuries as an EMT/firefighter.

The students will demonstrate and employ the professional attributes expected of the EMT/firefighter.

Students will perform and demonstrate the roles and responsibilities of an EMT/firefighter with regard to personal safety and wellness, as well as safety of others.

The student will perform the duties of an EMT/firefighter with regard for medical-legal and ethical issues, function successfully under supervision/direction, and within the scope of practice.

Develop an awareness of the entrance requirements for careers in the emergency medical and fire services.

Students will apply critical thinking skills necessary to utilize appropriate strategies and tactics to safely manage incidents in emergency medical and fire service operations.
